Designing the signage of a modern icon
ABOUT
The Costume Museum is located in Madrid. With over 30,000 pieces of clothing, its collections range from regional and historical costumes from the Middle Ages to contemporary garments designed by the most acclaimed Spanish fashion designers.

(A) Project Challenge
The building of the Museo del Traje in Madrid, designed by Jaime López de Asiain and Ángel Díaz Domínguez and built between 1971 and 1973 to house the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, is a key work of modern Spanish architecture and was awarded the National Architecture Prize in 1969. The site features several entrances, a large garden, and multiple access points to the building, which makes navigating the space challenging for first-time visitors. The museum commissioned us to audit the existing signage and subsequently design a panel system that would integrate both with the building and with the existing totems in the garden.

(B) CREATIVE PROPOSAL
After visiting the site and interviewing different museum staff members, we identified the main paths that visitors might follow. From there, we defined a clear and accessible signage system with high contrast that remained consistent with the visual language used inside the museum. We used the large central staircase and the concrete flooring as supports to guide visitors toward the point where all major tours begin, effectively resolving the most common orientation issues.
